To play a solider...again
The film is based on the book by Nicholas Sparks, which was published in 2006. Sparks also wrote The Notebook, which was turned into a successful Hollywood weeper. In Dear John, Tatum will play a soldier who comes home on leave and falls in love with a quiet college student. Tatum recently played a serviceman in Stop-Loss, so this is familiar turf for the actor. Lasse Hallstrom, who lensed The Cider House Rules, will direct, with Screen Gems distributing.
In the meantime, Tatum is currently shooting a surefire blockbuster, the live action version of G.I. Joe. He'll portray second in command Duke Hauser.
