Noted African-American director Spike Lee has agreed to write and direct the film Time Traveler. The film is a feature-length adaptation of the memoir of physicist Ronald Mallett, one of the first African-American scholars to receive a Ph.D in theoretical physics.

Mallett is currently a professor at the University of Connecticut and has spent much of his academic career working on a time machine which incorporates a ring laser and the theory of relativity. Mallett's obsession with building a time machine stems from his love for the classic book The Time Machine and his desire to go back in time to save his father, who died of a massive heart attack at the young age of 33. Lee acquired the rights to Mallett's memoir, Time Traveler: A Scientist's Personal Mission to Make Time Travel a Reality, which details the good doctor's triumphant rise from poor, humble beginnings to the ranks of respected scholar.
