OctoArts EMI Music's Kulay OPM Timeless Collection Gold Series 4 is a compilation of songs taken from two albums recorded by hip-hop/funk trio Kulay for the label: 1995's 100,000 Pesos Worth of Karma and 1996's Flavour of da Moment. Kulay since resigned with Sony Music Entertainment Philippines.
Kulay consists of two female singers and one male rapper and has been called the Philippines' premier hip-hop band. This album shows why. The opening song, "Should I Stay or Should I Go," is a remake of the Clash's hit, and it is given a soulful funk treatment here, replete with enticing horn fills.
"Allryte" is heavily gospel-flavored and has an element of funk, while "Flavour of da Moment" is draped in silky smooth rhythm & blues and also contains a stirring rap performed by Kulay group leader Boom Dayupay. Dayupay writes nearly all of Kulay's material and produces and arranges the music as well.
"Magbago" is another excellent song, featuring a jazzy piano introduction and fills, and it has an element of old-school rhythm & blues. The song moves at a sensuous pace, the vocals handled suavely by the group's two female singers.
"Let Your Love Rule" is heavily funkified and contains ringing rhythm guitar as well as funky horn fills, while "Satisfied" features a tender melody and pretty acoustic guitar playing. Unfortunately, despite the excellence exhibited on these songs, the albums that comprise this compilation did not sell well, as Filipino listeners aren't heavily attuned to hip-hop. ~ David Gonzales, All Music Guide
