Q magazine putting together a compilation called Essential Dance is as fitting as The Wire putting together a volume of The Wiretapper featuring nothing but teen pop. Believe it or not, the former situation actually happened, and surprisingly enough, the result isn't a total disaster. This compilation essentially represents the acceptable faces of dance music, and that entails the likes of Depeche Mode ("World in My Eyes"), Pet Shop Boys (the David Morales mix of "So Hard"), U2 (the Perfecto mix of "Even Better Than the Real Thing"), A Guy Called Gerald ("Voodoo Ray"), the Orb ("Once More"), and Stereo MC's ("Connected"). This is an ideal compilation for those who felt that Noel Gallagher's first collaboration with the Chemical Brothers somehow validated dance music. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
