Wynton Marsalis hosts this series of clips featuring great trumpeters in loosely chronological order. Highlights include Louis Armstrong on two songs from 1933, Bunny Berigan in his only film appearance (1936's "Until Today"), Muggsy Spanier's "Someday Sweetheart," a trumpet battle by Charlie Shavers and Buck Clayton, Miles Davis on "So What," Lester Bowie in 1981 jamming freely over the chord changes of "I Got Rhythm," and the only joint appearance of Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong. Other trumpeters seen include Red Allen, Red Nichols, Freddie Jenkins, Cootie Williams, Harry James, Rex Stewart, Roy Eldridge, Lee Morgan, Art Farmer, Shorty Rogers, Clark Terry, Nat Adderley, Freddie Hubbard, and Wynton himself. Some of the excerpts are more common than others, but overall this video is well worth getting. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
