PURE NOSTALGIA & ALL THAT JAZZ / VARIOUS

    All Music Guide Review

Stylistically it's pure hodgepodge, but this ASV/Living Era compilation does excel at offering some of the best prewar material that traditional pop audiences identify as nostalgia. Whether it's a cowboy ballad, a French chanson, or a Hoagy Carmichael evergreen, the compilers aim for a sense of ennui that makes good use of that certain something: "Long Ago (And Far Away)" with Helen Forrest and Dick Haymes, "La Vie en Rose" by Edith Piaf, "Body and Soul" by Coleman Hawkins, "Haunted Heart" by Perry Como. There aren't many obscurities here to interest committed vocal fans, but it's an intriguing compilation, indeed, that includes everything from Hank Williams' "Lovesick Blues" to Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang's "Wild Dog" to Edmundo Ros' "Cuban Love Song." ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
