Sampled, Vol. 3 collects more songs that became the templates for songs by other artists, including relatively well-known songs such as Diana Ross' "Love Hangover" and the Turtles' "You Showed Me," which were sampled in Will Smith's "Freakin' It" and De La Soul's "Transmitting Live from Mars," as well as more obscure tracks like John Barry & His Orchestra's "Beat Girl," the twangy guitar from which became the hook to Fatboy Slim's smash "The Rockafeller Skank." Several of Fatboy Slim's inspirations turn up on this collection, including the James Gang's "Ashes, the Rain and I," which was used in "Right Here, Right Now," and Lulu's "Love Love's to Love," which appeared in "Santa Cruz." Some of the tracks are more notable for the songs they were used in, such as Lalo Schifrin's "Danube Incident," which helped lend Portishead's "Sour Times" its prickly, eerie air, and Bolivar's "Merengue," an integral part of Basement Jaxx's "Bingo Bango." Other tracks allow you to discover -- or rediscover -- songs that sound just as good, if not better, than the better-known or more current songs that sample them, like Bob & Earl's "Harlem Shuffle," which became the backbone to House of Pain's "Jump Around," or Edwin Birdsong's "Cola Bottle Baby," which Daft Punk sampled for "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." Tracks by artists as diverse as James Brown, Thomas Newman, Toto, and the Turtles make this a fascinating and eclectic collection for anyone would like to know some of the history behind both the new and sampled songs. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
