I HEARD IT ON NPR: JAZZ FOR BLUE NIGHTS / VAIROUS

    All Music Guide Review

For what it is, this volume in the marketing-project series I Heard It on NPR: Jazz for Blue Nights is a pleasant if not particularly notable collection of jazz tunes that have been broadcast on NPR whether as incidental transition music, or as part of an artist or review feature. There are lots better ways to begin a jazz collection, but this will get you diversion and/or may spur some evening guests to conversation -- isn't that what all of these comps in this series are really for, so people can feel "hep"? There are tracks by the Miles Davis Quintet and Cannonball Adderley's hot band, as well as classics by Tommy Flanagan and Sarah Vaughan mixed in with newer artists like pianist Bill Charlap, and composer and songwriter Patricia Barber. Nancy Wilson and Ron Carter are also included here for light touches, and Dexter Gordon's trademark smoky ballads (in "Love for Sale") also hit the spot. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
