All Music Guide Review

Although this CD was dedicated to the recently deceased Art Blakey, drummer Ralph Peterson (a swinging player anyway) does not modify his own style or merely re-create Blakey's recordings. Instead he heads a notable quintet (with cornetist Graham Haynes, Steve Wilson on soprano and alto, pianist Michele Rosewoman and bassist Phil Bowler) that performs four of his originals (including "I Remember Bu" and "The Art of Blakey"), a song by Rosewoman, John Coltrane's "Central Park West," "People Make the World Go Round" and "When You Wish Upon a Star." In addition, trombonist Frank Lacy and tenor saxophonist Craig Handy augment the band for Wayne Shorter's "Free for All." It is a little unusual hearing Haynes and Rosewoman performing modern hard bop; both display fresh and original voices in the older style. An excellent effort for all concerned. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
