Disc jockey John Peel talked at great length over several years about the eventual release of "the Fall sessions" - his favourite band having recorded at least 20 times for the BBC. However, the old man river of U.K. indie pop simply could not decide what to choose. He insisted he wanted to include every song the band ever recorded (60+ for the Peel programme alone, at least 20 more for other BBC DJs). When this proved impracticable, this EP emerged, featuring a December 1978 session (with Marc Riley on bass) - the Fall's second for the programme. These versions of "Put Away," "No Xmas for John Quay," "Like to Blow," and "Mess of My" arguably outshine their studio counterparts - as was the case with many early punk bands, the BBC offered a comparatively professional studio environment and facilities. As for the box set of Fall sessions - we wait expectantly. ~ Alex Ogg, All Music Guide
