Desultory's third album finds the death-metal band adding more melody into their foreboding, near-gothic heavy riffs. Instead of diluting the group's impact, the addition of stronger hooks actually makes the album more powerful, especially since it coincided with the group toughening up their rhythmic attack. Though Swallow the Snake lacks the consistent songwriting of Bitterness, these musical improvements make it nearly as impressive. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
