    All Music Guide Review

By the 1980s, RCA's jazz was mostly centered around the conservative, hard bop-based Young Lions. On this 1997 reissue CD (the seventh of eight discs that cover a decade apiece), most of the music does not necessarily sound as if it is from the 1980s, particularly the well-played but somewhat derivative efforts by Roy Hargrove and Marcus Roberts. In addition to Carmen McRae singing "'Round Midnight" from her famed Thelonious Monk tribute album, there are out-of-place numbers by Hugh Masekela and Cleo Laine & Dudley Moore, two weak pieces from Chet Baker, and a tune apiece by the Brecker Brothers and Steve Coleman. Not too essential. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
