All Music Guide Review
Yet another excellent collection from British blues and R&B label Indigo, 1942-45: The R&B Hits chronicles the heady period when small and big band swing morphed into jump blues in major cities across the U.S. Featuring 44 cuts spread over two discs, the mix takes in most of the major players, including Louis Jordan, Lucky Millinder, Wynonie Harris, Joe Turner, Jimmy Rushing, the Count Basie band, and Jimmy Liggins. Also on hand are such smooth crooners as Nat King Cole, Ivory Joe Hunter, and Helen Humes. Mighty contributions are also heard from vintage blues picker Tampa Red, R&B-hewn jazz diva Dinah Washington, rock & roll forefather Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, and vibraphone master Lionel Hampton. Crucial cuts abound on an album which consistently rocks the house. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
