      FOUNDATION: CHOPPED & SCREWED (CHOP)

    All Music Guide Review

With plenty of hooks and solid beats, the Geto Boys' The Foundation lends itself well to the hallucinatory screwed and chopped format. It's easy to groove to and a druggy delight, but it is also a prime example of what screwed and chopped detractors point to when dismissing the genre. Mixer Mike Dean seems to be out of the studio often during the album, letting The Foundation's tracks play at a slower speed, otherwise untouched. There's a filter here and a filter there, but not much else in the way of spacy noise. Once in a while a line gets chopped repeatedly with Dean working the turntable like a champ, and his tendency to drop beats entirely creates some good drama. Shame there wasn't more of it because, as it is, The Foundation (Screwed) is run-of-the-mill screwed and barely chopped. Worth the most hardcore sizzurp sipper's full attention because of the legends involved, but barely recommendable to everyone else. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide
