In the summer of 1998, Rhino released three collections designed to act as soundtracks -- or at least theme albums -- for three of the Discovery Networks' cable channels. Discovery Channel: Travel Channel - Around the World was one of these. The idea behind this disc was to compile a selection of indigenous musics from around the world, approximating some sort of musical travelogue. The disc concentrates on Latin and African musics, but it does wind up offering a good overview of worldbeat, featuring tracks from Ali Farka Toure, Tish Hinojosa, King Sunny Ade, Johnny Clegg, Hugh Masekela, Ottmar Liebert, Bela Fleck, BeauSoleil, Gilberto Gil and Aswad. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
