    All Music Guide Review

It's debatable whether all the featured artists on BMG Special Products' Hits from the Underground: The 70's were actually part of the underground -- sure, Dave Edmunds didn't move that many records, but recreating the Everlys' take on Ray Charles' "Leave My Woman Alone" doesn't quite count as underground -- but that doesn't mean that the budget-line collection isn't worth a listen. The compilers have done a pretty good job of rounding up ten cult artists from the '70s, then selecting representative songs from each act. Sure, Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna feel like '60s relics instead of '70s artists, but Jonathan Richman ("Road Runner"), the Flamin' Groovies ("Teenage Head"), Lou Reed ("Perfect Day"), Gil Scott-Heron ("The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"), Captain Beefheart ("Abba Zaba"), Elliott Murphy ("Isadora's Dances") and even ol' Edmunds are part of the fabric of '70s cult-rock. Which is why this is a good budget-line sampler, one that's worthwhile for casual budget-minded fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
