To Go: Stick It in Your Ear

    09/19/2006 | Verve

    All Music Guide Review

Just a quick taste of what she can offer, the Billie Holiday best-of To Go offers six of Lady Day's most famous pieces (an exception being "Crazy He Calls Me," which, while not lacking any of the swing or style of her other work, just hasn't been as highly compiled as songs like "God Bless the Child" and "Strange Fruit" have been). It is, perhaps, exactly what it says it is: just a quick 20 minutes, something for the commute home, something you pick up and take with you, no need to sit down and actually chew. For any big Holiday fan, this album will be an unnecessary edition, even to an incomplete collection, and since there are better options for introductory compilations, To Go remains merely a cheap, decent, and far too short representation of her large body of work. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide
