SIMPLE SONGS OF FREEDOM: TIM HARDIN COLLECTION

    All Music Guide Review

Enigmatic and frequently brilliant, Tim Hardin was unlike any other songwriter on the scene in the 1960s, and his folk and blues-based songs gained a haunting and spooky power through his jazzy, low-key vocal approach. This set is unfortunately pretty uneven, although it has a couple of gems, including the wonderful "Shiloh Town," the Bobby Darin-penned "Simple Song of Freedom" (which was ironically Hardin's only Top 100 chart entry during his career), and Hardin's delicate version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire," but on the whole those curious about this singular singer and songwriter will get a better sense of his considerable talents by checking out Polydor's Reason to Believe collection from 1990 (although it lacks "Shiloh Town," which is a shame). ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
