    All Music Guide Review

As can be expected from a label with a one-word slogan reading "noise," Amphetamine Reptile is home to an assemblage of singularly dissonant punk rock bands utterly devoted to scabrous music. Amphetamine Reptile Peel Sessions contains selections recorded for the BBC by the label's biggest stars, and the results are, for the most part, predictable. The Cows set the tone with their covers of "You Are So Beautiful" and "How Dry I Am," both of which are complete with slurred vocals and grimy guitars. Helmet's two tracks are as brutal and tuneless as the rest of their oeuvre. Tar's contributions, one of which is an instrumental, both contain offbeat, complex structures and energetic playing, but are ultimately hampered by a lack of compelling melodies. Only Surgery really breaks from the pack with their gritty blues-rockers "Dear Sweet Laura" (an ode to Superchunk bassist Laura Ballance, available only on this collection) and "D-Nice." For the most part, though, the material is identical to standard Amphetamine Reptile fare, omitting some of the label's far more eccentric, unconventional acts such as Helios Creed. Ultimately, Amphetamine Reptile Peel Sessions will leave noise punk devotees satisfied, but has little to offer to casual fans. ~ Victor W. Valdivia, All Music Guide
