"Channel Z," a fine song that effortlessly updated the classic B-52's sound, was the first single pulled from Cosmic Thing, and while it didn't become a huge hit, it made for a good single and still stands as one of their better songs of the era. "Channel Z" was released in a multitude of forms. In the U.S., it was released as a promotional 12-inch single, featuring the original album version, a seven-inch edit and remix, a "12-inch rock mix" and a "12-inch rock dub." All of these, except the album version, were featured on the CD-5 single released in the U.S. That track listing was replicated on the U.K. promotional 12-inch, as well as the official CD-3 single. Then in the U.K., two different seven-inch singles were released, both featuring the seven-inch edit/remix as the A-side. The first had "Junebug" as the B-side, the second (which featured a TV set on the picture sleeve and was also released as a cassette single) had an edit of "Roam" on the flip side. All of the singles are entertaining, but the U.S. CD single was the best bargain of the batch, simply because it contains the most music. But many less dedicated fans will find they're happiest with the "Channel Z" on Cosmic Thing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
